Coffee Roasting
Great, you have the beans.
How do you make coffee?

I’m Using a Pan
Using a pan may just be the easiest and most traditional way of roasting your beans. Roast your beans over gas or electric stove in mere minutes.
Oven Recipe
45 – 55 minutes
220 °C top and bottom heat or grill

Step 1
Preheat the oven to 220 degrees Celsius (420 F). Make sure the oven is well heated before putting the beans in there. If you want a slower roast, you can try 200 degrees and take a bit longer.
Step 2
Prepare your tray: spread the beans evenly over a sheet of baking paper. Make sure no beans are overlapping so they can all benefit from the heat equally.
Step 3
The beans should start to ‘crack’. Other than corn, coffee pops twice. Shuffle the beans after the first ‘crack’, so to ensure both sides of the bean is roasted.
Step 4
Take out your beans once they have reached your preferred color. Darker roasts have a stronger, bittersweet taste. Lighter coffee preserves a bit more flavor because there is less ‘burning’. You can sieve or wash the beans to get rid of the chaff.

Gas or Electric stove

Step 1
Place your beans in a pan over a low – medium heat. The beans should get hot enough to roast, yet cool enough to not burn. For induction use power level 5 or 6.
Step 2
Heat and stir the beans for about 35-40 minutes. The beans should ‘crack’ two times. This cracking works similar to corn, trapped water escapes. Make sure to enjoy the smell.
Step 3
Keep stirring until the beans reached your preferred ‘roast’. Slower roast preserve more flavor. The darker the roast, the more bitter the coffee gets. Light roast preserve a bit more flavor but might be a bit more watery.
Step 4
You can sieve or wash the beans to get rid of the chaff.

Water Cooker, coffee filter and holder

Step 1
If you haven’t done so: grind your beans. This can be done through multiple ways. The finer the grind, the better the coffee. You can use a food processor, a mortar and pestle or a coffee grinder.
Step 2
Boil some water to the highest heat you can get. The hotter the water, the more flavor will be extracted from the coffee. Ideal temperatures are roughly 90°C (190 F).
Step 3
Place the ground coffee in the filter and put the filter holder over a cup or pot. Store bought coffee uses about 5 grams of coffee per cup (220 ml). If your grind is less fine, you might need more.
Step 4
Pour the water over the coffee in bursts. The water tends cool over time, heating in between pouring is a good idea to get maximum flavour. Protip: put a little bit of coffee in a blender to make some delicious coffee cream.
